Sujit Choudhry’s Open Letter to Catalonia and Spain

The Spanish and Catalan governments have been in conflict regarding the secession of Catalonia for some time now. A group of experts in constitutional law including Sujit Choudhry wrote an open letter to the two governments imploring them to use dialogue to solve their issues. The experts urged the president of Catalonia, Puidgemont, to take steps to show his commitment to seceding. The prime minister of Spain, Rajoy, was also asked not to interfere with the wishes of the Catalans to secede from Spain.

The two governments resolving their issues amicably will be beneficial to the people living in both Catalonia and Spain and beyond. This can be achieved through a referendum, which would enable people to understand what both sides want and what the challenges are. Something else that was addressed in the letter was the fact that while the majority of Catalans do want to secede, many are against it. Therefore, the views of all these people need to be taken into account to ensure that the decision that is arrived at is representative of the wishes of the Catalans as a whole.

Sujit Choudhry discusses constitutional challenges facing Ukrainian presidential system

Sujit Choudhry is a renowned expert on comparative constitutional law. He serves as the Director for Constitutional Transitions. Sujit has written and published more than 60 works on the constitution, especially in emerging democracies. He has a wealth of experience that spans over several decades. Due to his nature of work, Sujit spends a significant portion of his time with his boots on the ground.

In his career, Sujit Choudhry has visited numerous countries from numerous parts of the globe where helps them to formulate and review their constitutional systems. In 2003, Sujit and a team of constitutional experts went to Sri Lanka to help the country to resolve the stalemate that it was facing. Sujit and his team had gone to propose a federalist solution to the country that was engulfed in ethnic conflict. They passed through barricaded roads, burnt villages and checked point guarded by the militia. The conflict in the country did not deter them from achieving their objective.

Sujit and another team of constitutional experts engaged in similar activities in Nepal in 2007and 2010. They were advocating for constitutional negotiations. Choudhry has also appeared three times before the Canadian Supreme court. At the time, he was giving his expert opinion in the highly publicized case of Omar Khadr.

This year, Sujit joined another team of constitutional experts on 10th July in Kiev. Sujit and his team were discussing the semi-presidential system of the Ukrainian government. The workshop was hosted by various organizations that include Internationa Institute for democracy, the center of policy and legal reform and the electorate assistance. Other organizations that majorly contributed towards the workshop include intergovernmental organizations that support sustainable democracy throughout the world.

Sujit Choudhry’s Contributions to Law

Sujit Choudhry is the professor of Law at the University of California. He was previously a professor of Law in New York University and the school chair in Toronto University. He is internationally recognized in politics since he has spoken in more than 24 countries in the world.
