Sujit Choudhry’s Open Letter to Catalonia and Spain

The Spanish and Catalan governments have been in conflict regarding the secession of Catalonia for some time now. A group of experts in constitutional law including Sujit Choudhry wrote an open letter to the two governments imploring them to use dialogue to solve their issues. The experts urged the president of Catalonia, Puidgemont, to take steps to show his commitment to seceding. The prime minister of Spain, Rajoy, was also asked not to interfere with the wishes of the Catalans to secede from Spain.

The two governments resolving their issues amicably will be beneficial to the people living in both Catalonia and Spain and beyond. This can be achieved through a referendum, which would enable people to understand what both sides want and what the challenges are. Something else that was addressed in the letter was the fact that while the majority of Catalans do want to secede, many are against it. Therefore, the views of all these people need to be taken into account to ensure that the decision that is arrived at is representative of the wishes of the Catalans as a whole.
